Preview pages of Ales Kot and Marco Rudy’s Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier #1

aleskot is one of the most interesting and polarizing new writers on the scene right now. If Bucky Barnes: The Winter Soldier is anything like his previous work, you’re in for a treat.

Gotham Academy by beckycloonan gave me a definite Howarts in Gotham vibe and that might be the best thing ever.

Jen Keith recommends Booster Gold: Futures End #1

With the Futures End event thrusting the DC New 52 universe five years into the future, it’s about time they bring the megalomaniac hero from the future, Booster Gold, back into the fray. We saw our favorite glory hound fade into nothingness in JLI Annual #1 after his future self suddenly appeared and said that he had to stop…what? Superman and Wonder Woman from becoming the new power couple (maybe he’s more of a Batman and Wonder Woman fan)? The mystery of this strange message and Booster’s sudden disappearance still stands, but it seems we’re finally getting some answers.

Booster Gold: Futures End #1 is a smorgasbord of cameos sure to delight long-time DC fans (hint: yes, pre-New 52 fans, this means you). We get to see what’s going on with Booster since he disappeared, including a visit to the Gotham By Gaslight  Elseworld, Earth 4, and more! Going by the hints and nods to previous histories, I keep wondering what impact this will have and just what his current torturous captors are plotting. I’ve been psyched about what plans DC has for Booster since the announcement of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold in December’s Justice League 3000 written by the original Justice League Internationalwriters, so this new book was an instant must-read that did not disappoint my needing a Booster Gold fix.

Hopping between multiple universes in one story could get confusing, but the large creative team eases this by swapping every time Booster changes locations. There’s a lot of talent packed in this issue, including Moritat, Brett Booth, Will Conrad, and many more; Dan Jurgens, creator of Booster Gold and veteran creative team member on Booster’s solo books, wrote this one-shot and even drew a portion.

Can one comic truly contain the massive ego of multiple Booster Golds? Will he tell his captors what they’re willing to go as far as murder to find out? No time traveling needed – find out in Booster Gold: Futures End #1.

The New Teen Titans by George Perez, in honor of Marv Wolfman’s birthday today.

Marv and George’s New Teen Titans 16 was the comic that brought me to DC after only being a Marvel kid. Marv also inspired me to write my first fan letter when I was a little kid, for his work on Fantastic Four, which netted me an actual No-Prize (the reward for a kid sending in a hand-written fan-letter, not for anything like pointing out an error in the comic).

Gene Simmons likes to mention how he and Marv once created a fanzine together back before he formed KISS, but their paths obviously diverged from there. Which turned out good for comics… but had Marv only played the sax or some other instrument back then, his world might be very different now…

Anyway, happy birthday to the Wolfman!

We just got some of Wolfman & Perez’s class New Teen Titans in the store!

Harris Smith recommends Stumptown Vol. 3 #1

Greg Rucka (ruckawriter) is, along with his sometimes collaborator Ed Brubaker, one of the modern masters of crime comics.  With Brubaker, he brought out the noir-ish possibilities of the DC Universe in Gotham Central (https://www.comixology.com/Greg-Rucka/comics-creator/64), and on his own he’s created a definitive take on urban vigilante The Punisher and contributed to the likes of Batman, Daredevil, the Huntress and Black Widow.  In his more personal work, Rucka is responsible for creating one of the most memorable and compelling comic detective characters in recent years, Dex Porois, the private eye heroine of his Stumptown series.

Drawing from the rich literary tradition of such contemporary crime writers as Lawrence Block, Elmore Leonard and Dennis Lehane, Rucka (a crime novelist himself in addition to his comics work) crafts Porois as a highly relatable and sympathetic character.  She’s well intentioned but flawed and occasionally prone to bad decisions.  In an issue of one of the Portland, OR-set Stumptown series, the reader might find her, by turns, working towards solving a heinous crime, caring for her mentally disabled brother and struggling with her gambling addiction.

Porois’ relationship with her brother and their mutual obsession with soccer headline the debut issue of Stumptown Vol. 3, available now on comiXology.  The opener is sport heavy, focusing on character relationships through both an amateur-league soccer game, which Porois plays in with her friends, and a major league game she attends with her brother.  Rucka builds excitement throughout the issue via the tension of the various sports games on display and the rivalries they bring out in their various participants, pinnacling with the revelation of a bloody crime and the start of what will presumably be the central mystery of Stumptown Vol. 3.  It’s an effective start to what promises to be yet another superlative crime saga from one of the genre’s greats.
