A comiXologist recommends…
THANOS #1, by Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato Jr.
After the events of Civil War II, Thanos has returned to the Black Quadrant. Will he rule once again? Pick this up to find out.
The story is written by Sweet Tooth creator and Moon Knight writer, Jeff Lemire. In this first issue, Lemire does a fantastic job of introducing us to Thanos, the Mad Titan. Lemire also uses some Cosmic characters that haven’t been around in a while, so it’s always great to see characters get the spotlight once again. The story is a solid starting point for any newcomer or comic veteran, but the ending is what will make you come back for issue #2. No spoilers here, but you may not want to Google search for Thanos #1 until you read this issue.
The art from Amazing Spider-Man and New Avenger’s artist Mike Deodato Jr perfectly complements the tone and mood of this book. Deodato’s pacing and panel layouts really add to the storytelling in the book. Undoubtedly one of the greatest things about Deodato’s art is the amount of details he puts into a panel, from cross-hatching on characters’ faces to the use of dots to convey depth and mood. All of this is helped by the colors of Frank Martin, who really helps bring everything together. The art for this book is gorgeous, and if you give this book a shot I hope you will enjoy it as well.
My verdict is you should pick up this book if you enjoy Marvel Cosmic books, bad-guys as the protagonist, or just want to find out more about that guy who has been showing up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Plus, it’s a first issue, so that is always a great starting point for something new!
