Strange is mankind’s only hope against the dark other-worldly forces that conspire to destroy the conscious world. Catch the beginning of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s amazing run. Collects stories from Strange Tales #110-111, 114-141 & Amazing Spider-Man Annual (1964) #2.

Doctor Strange: Strange Origin

How did Stephen Strange become Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme? Find out in a high-flying, globe-trotting, window-crashing, ghost-battling adventure from the earliest days of Strange’s magical training! Part Indiana Jones, part Lord of the Rings, this uncanny origin story reveals how a selfish, arrogant surgeon collided with a hot-headed martial artist to become the greatest team the mystic arts have ever seen! But can Strange and Wong stop hitting each other and figure out how all this magic stuff works, anyway? Plus: Years later, an older and wiser Doctor Strange is all that stands between Earth and the forces of darkness. Every act of magic has its cost, but has Stephen been paying his tab? Get spellbound by the past and present of a Marvel hero with a big future! Collects Dr. Strange: Season One, Doctor Strange (2015) #1.

Find out as the good doctor wakes up somewhere very odd, nearly naked — with no spell books, no weapons and no memory of how he got there…or why all the monsters are chasing him! And as a new visitor to Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum learns one wrong door can lead to oblivion, a magic circle of Strange’s friends and allies are about to face their greatest threat. Dark forces are destroying everything mystical in the multiverse, and their sights are set on this dimension. Magic’s days are numbered, and Doctor Strange is not ready! Collects Doctor Strange (2015) #1-5.

The Jasons are at it again! SOUTHERN BASTARDS #15 is new this week!

NEW STORY ARC: “GUT CHECK,” Part One

Coach Boss holds sway over Craw County for one reason: he wins football games. But after the biggest, ugliest loss of his career, the coach must become more of a criminal than ever before, if he’s gonna keep ahead of his enemies. Enemies like Roberta Tubb, who’s come to town with a machine gun and some serious questions about how her daddy died. The 2015 Harvey Award-winning (Best New Series) and 2016 Eisner Award-winning (Best Continuing Series) southern-fried crime comic by JASON AARON & JASON LATOUR is back for another round of football, BBQ, and bloodshed!

A comiXologist recommends…a worthy new series:

THE UNWORTHY THOR #1 by Jason Aaron, Olivier Coipel, and Matt Wilson

After a lengthy absence from the Marvel universe, the original Thor has re-emerged. Since the events of Original Sin, the Odinson has been unable to wield the legendary Mjolnir and has fallen on hard times. No longer an Avenger, Thor is a prisoner by an unknown captor. Being a life-long fan of the character, I had high expectations for the eventual return of the original God of Thunder, and The Unworthy Thor #1 doesn’t disappoint. Guided by a mysterious figure, the Odinson is sent on a quest to find another Mjolnir, one of the few relics to survive the destruction of the Ultimate Universe. Will the Odinson find atonement for the act that caused him to become unworthy? I hope this series sheds light on the yet-to-be revealed reason Thor lost his hammer in the first place. The first part of his journey sends Thor to Asgard, long abandoned by the gods. What he finds there is heartbreaking and something he never expected. There’s also an appearance by a familiar “worthy” ally. Jason Aaron sets up a gritty tone for the story that is a perfect companion to Olivier Coipel’s art which draws you in with raw emotion and action. I would recommend this book for anyone seeking a good starting point to an epic Marvel story starring one of its most beloved characters. Where this leads and how the Odinson’s journey may affect Jane Foster Thor we’ll have to see. Hop back on the Odinson bandwagon and follow his journey to redemption.

John Paterno is comiXology’s art director and also probably Nightwing.
