VALIANT HIGH

TEENAGERS TODAY… HEROES TOMORROW! A unique entry-point that’s perfect for new fans and longtime readers alike, Valiant High presents a hilarious reimagining of Valiant’s award-winning superhero universe – one where the next world-ending cataclysm will have to wait until after prom night! Before they became legends, the world’s most formidable heroes were roaming the halls at Valiant High – a super-powered preparatory academy where Aric “X-O Manowar” Dacia is a record-setting running back, Colin “Ninjak” King is a debonair foreign exchange student, and Coach Bloodshot is way, way too into dodgeball. Now, Amanda “Livewire” McKee and her best friend, Faith “Zephyr” Herbert, are taking it all in for the first time at the one high school where power trumps popularity! From The Late Show with Stephen Colbert writer Daniel Kibblesmith, artist Derek Charm (Jughead) and David Baron (BLOODSHOT REBORN), this highly anticipated comiXology Originals series takes Valiant’s biggest and most beloved superheroes out of battle and into the greatest challenge of all: high school! Collecting VALIANT HIGH #1–4.

ONE MORE YEAR

Simon Hanselmann’s previous two Megg & Mogg books have both been New York Times best-sellers, and One More Year continues to cement Hanselmann as one his generation’s defining graphic novelists. Megg the witch, Mogg the cat, and their friends Owl and Werewolf Jones are imbued with far more pathos and depth than seems plausible. One More Year continues to give more substance to the characters and personalities of its protagonists in ways that never fail to surprise, delight, and horrify.

In light of the latest NASA news can you recommend some comics set it space? Including, of corse, Southern Cross which is great!

Hello! Lou here, from The ComiXologist podcast crew. You know I love Southern Cross, so that’s an excellent place to start.

When I saw this ask, I turned to podcast co-host Slim and said, “Want to help me make some recs on Tumblr?” And without missing a beat, he goes, “Fear Agent.” Which does take place in space! So, that’s Slim’s contribution. (Also, possibly Slim is psychic?)

FEAR AGENT Vol. 1: RE-IGNITION

When downandout alien exterminator Heath Huston stumbles upon an extraterrestrial plot to commit genocide against the human species, he must put down the bottle and resume his roll as a peacekeeper… as the last Fear Agent. This volume collects Fear Agent #1 #4 and sports new cover art! “Fear Agent is absolutely everything I love about comics in one fantastic package.” – Matt Fraction, Casanova, Iron Fist, The Punisher

I have to recommend Descender, because space doesn’t get much more beautiful than when Dustin Nguyen paints it. (Also, it’s on sale through 2/27/17!)

DESCENDER Vol. 1: TIN STARS

One young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from the creators of Trillium, Sweet Tooth, and Little Gotham.

You know who else makes space look gorgeous? Christian Ward. ODY-C is an intensely gorgeous book, and Matt Fraction does amazing work adapting Homer’s epic to a sci-fi setting.

ODY-C Vol. 1: OFF TO FAR ITHICAA

An epic 26 centuries in the making: In the aftermath of a galactic war a hundred years long, Odyssia the Clever Champion and her compatriots begin their longest, strangest trip yet: the one home. A gender-bent eye-popping psychedelic science fiction odyssey begins HERE, by MATT FRACTION (CASANOVA, SEX CRIMINALS, SATELLITE SAM) and CHRISTIAN WARD (INFINITE VACATION, OLYMPUS).

On the Marvel side of things in space, Dan Slott and Mike Allred do a bang-up job with Silver Surfer.

SILVER SURFER Vol. 1: NEW DAWN

The Silver Surfer, sentinel of the cosmos, is often alone on his quest to defend space. All that changes when Surfer meets earthling Dawn Greenwood, a young woman determined to push the Surfer’s boundaries. Plus, the introduction of the villain known as Never Queen! When Surfer tries to return Dawn home, he finds himself in his strangest battle yet with Shuma-Gorath!

Finally, the NASA news made me think of Charles Soule and Alberto Alburquerque’s Letter 44. Only, IRL, I’m sure everything will be fine. *nervous laughter* Anyway, it’s definitely a great read!

LETTER 44 Vol. 1: ESCAPE VELOCITY

On Inauguration Day, newly elected President Stephen Blades hoped to tackle the most critical issues facing the nation: war, the economy, and a failing health care system. But in a letter penned by the outgoing President, Blades learns the truth that redefines “critical”: seven years ago, NASA discovered alien presence in the asteroid belt, and kept it a secret from the world. A stealth mission crewed by nine astronauts was sent to make contact, and they’re getting close - assuming they survive the long journey to reach their destination.

Today, President-elect Blades has become the most powerful man on the planet. This planet.
