And Ayo and Aneka, the Midnight Angels, are courted to raise their land to new glory! His allies dwindling, T'Challa must rely on his elite secret police, the Hatut Zeraze, and fellow Avenger Eden Fesi, a.k.a. Manifold! And with T'Challa’s back truly against the wall, some old friends lend a hand: Luke Cage, Misty Knight and Storm! But Wakanda may be too far gone for this all-new, all-different crew — and there’s one job the Panther must handle alone. Only he can voyage into the Djalia! Getting there is hard enough, but can he even find his sister Shuri inside Wakanda’s collective memory?

New today! BLACK PANTHER #8 by Ta-nehisi Coates and Chris Sprouse

VOYAGE INTO THE DJALIA T'Challa’s research and technology takes him to a place that not even THE CREW can follow: THE DJALIA, Wakanda’s collective memory. Even so, the strain on his Soul-Stalker abilities might tear him apart before he gets very far…

New this week! BLACK PANTHER: WORLD OF WAKANDA #1, by Roxane Gay, Alitha E. Martinez, Yona Harvey, Afua Richardson, and Ta-Nahisi Coates

“YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE, LITTLE FLOWER. YOU DESERVED A WAKANDA THAT CHERISHED YOU.” Writer ROXANE GAY (Bad Feminst, Hunger) spins a Wakandan love story — its tenderness matched only by its brutality. You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but in this story they are just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to become Dora Milaje, an elite task force trained to protect the crown at all costs. What happens when your nation needs your hearts and minds, but you already gave them to each other? Illustrated by industry veteran ALITHA E. MARTINEZ (Iron Man, Black Panther). And in a special backup story, acclaimed poet YONA HARVEY (Hemming the Water) explores the true origins of The People’s mysterious leader Zenzi. Black Panther thinks he knows who Zenzi is and how she got her powers, but he only knows part of the story… Illustrated by rising star AFUA RICHARDSON (Genius).

What current marvel comics do you recommend

Hey @khoatic-worlds! Lou here, from the podcast crew! You have excellent timing. Three of my favorite current Marvel series have a new issue coming out this week.

image

MOCKINGBIRD by Chelsea Cain, Kate Niemczyk, & Rachelle Rosenberg

This is probably my favorite current Marvel title. It’s so witty, fun, and action packed.  Mockingbird is Bobbi Morse, a top SHIELD agent.  In the first arc, Bobbi is experiencing some…unpleasant side effects after being dosed with a few super serums, and is trying to get to the bottom of things amidst missions going south, corgis, bondage, and ex-boyfriends.  So, Bobbi needs a vacation. In the Civil War II tie-ins (where we are now) she’s on a cruise which turns out to be…not that relaxing. There’s a murder mystery, the Bermuda Triangle is kind of a problem, and don’t even get me started on the cosplayers. This is one of those tie-ins you can read even if you aren’t reading the main Civil War II event, the story tells you what you need to know.

BLACK WIDOW  by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Matt Wilson

This is the Black Widow movie we’ve all been wanting, in comic book form. Not only is the artwork gorgeously cinematic, but the story revolves around Natasha’s relationship with the secrets in her past, including the Red Room and some of her former espionage work that affected current friends and allies.  The Edmondson/Noto run on Black Widow (which is superb) was more about Natasha privately atoning for her past. Here she is forced to reckon with things head on. (Also, if you’re a BuckyNat shipper, pre-order covers for future issues suggest you’ll want to get on this.)

image

BLACK PANTHER by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze, and Chris Sprouse

This is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s first comic book, and he brings the same genius to his superhero stories as he does the cultural and socio-political insights for which he is renown (and I mean this literally, Coates is a MacArthur genius!). In his Black Panther run, Coates puts the two together to tell a story about T’Challa, king of the most technologically advanced nation in the world, trying to protect the people and traditions of Wakanda in the face of violent political unrest led by superhuman terrorists. The second arc of this run sees T’Challa struggling, looking for strategies and allies anywhere he can.  I am so excited for issue #7 (out this week) because Storm, Luke Cage, and Misty Knight (aka The Crew!) are on deck!
