Primary topic this episode: the books we read this week! Other topics include partying, Lou revealed a dark secret and Slim called HR, Lou reading the NYEWS, the end of Black Widow, thoughts on 12 issue runs, throwing shoes, Fear Agent RPG, FAVE COVERS, Lou breaks up with Slim essentially, being hungry for humans, WrestleMania oh baby, Spider-Man: Homecomics, FUTURE PICKS, and your letters!

In light of the latest NASA news can you recommend some comics set it space? Including, of corse, Southern Cross which is great!

Hello! Lou here, from The ComiXologist podcast crew. You know I love Southern Cross, so that’s an excellent place to start.

When I saw this ask, I turned to podcast co-host Slim and said, “Want to help me make some recs on Tumblr?” And without missing a beat, he goes, “Fear Agent.” Which does take place in space! So, that’s Slim’s contribution. (Also, possibly Slim is psychic?)

FEAR AGENT Vol. 1: RE-IGNITION

When downandout alien exterminator Heath Huston stumbles upon an extraterrestrial plot to commit genocide against the human species, he must put down the bottle and resume his roll as a peacekeeper… as the last Fear Agent. This volume collects Fear Agent #1 #4 and sports new cover art! “Fear Agent is absolutely everything I love about comics in one fantastic package.” – Matt Fraction, Casanova, Iron Fist, The Punisher

I have to recommend Descender, because space doesn’t get much more beautiful than when Dustin Nguyen paints it. (Also, it’s on sale through 2/27/17!)

DESCENDER Vol. 1: TIN STARS

One young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. A rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey that pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling space opera from the creators of Trillium, Sweet Tooth, and Little Gotham.

You know who else makes space look gorgeous? Christian Ward. ODY-C is an intensely gorgeous book, and Matt Fraction does amazing work adapting Homer’s epic to a sci-fi setting.

ODY-C Vol. 1: OFF TO FAR ITHICAA

An epic 26 centuries in the making: In the aftermath of a galactic war a hundred years long, Odyssia the Clever Champion and her compatriots begin their longest, strangest trip yet: the one home. A gender-bent eye-popping psychedelic science fiction odyssey begins HERE, by MATT FRACTION (CASANOVA, SEX CRIMINALS, SATELLITE SAM) and CHRISTIAN WARD (INFINITE VACATION, OLYMPUS).

On the Marvel side of things in space, Dan Slott and Mike Allred do a bang-up job with Silver Surfer.

image

SILVER SURFER Vol. 1: NEW DAWN

The Silver Surfer, sentinel of the cosmos, is often alone on his quest to defend space. All that changes when Surfer meets earthling Dawn Greenwood, a young woman determined to push the Surfer’s boundaries. Plus, the introduction of the villain known as Never Queen! When Surfer tries to return Dawn home, he finds himself in his strangest battle yet with Shuma-Gorath!

Finally, the NASA news made me think of Charles Soule and Alberto Alburquerque’s Letter 44. Only, IRL, I’m sure everything will be fine. *nervous laughter* Anyway, it’s definitely a great read!

LETTER 44 Vol. 1: ESCAPE VELOCITY

On Inauguration Day, newly elected President Stephen Blades hoped to tackle the most critical issues facing the nation: war, the economy, and a failing health care system. But in a letter penned by the outgoing President, Blades learns the truth that redefines “critical”: seven years ago, NASA discovered alien presence in the asteroid belt, and kept it a secret from the world. A stealth mission crewed by nine astronauts was sent to make contact, and they’re getting close - assuming they survive the long journey to reach their destination.

Today, President-elect Blades has become the most powerful man on the planet. This planet.

Sincere we talking about inspirations, and since this series came up in a question yesterday, how about the punk songs/albums that inspired the titles of the Fear Agent arcs?  The only one I’m not 100% sure about is Hatchet Job.

1. Re-Ignition (Bad Brains)

2. My War (Black Flag)

image

3. The Last Goodbye (Agent Orange)

4. Hatchet Job (I’m ashamed to admit I don’t know this one for sure).

Could be this:

Anyone know the definite answer?

5. I Against I (Bad Brains):

6. Out of Step (Minor Threat)

Now go forth and thrash! (and read Fear Agent)

Interview | Rick Remender

On occasion, Kara and Matt sit down by the fireplace (metaphorical) with creators to talk about their books, their process, and what they read themselves. Since some folks don’t have time for podcasts, we also transcribe these chats. Some parts of the interview have been abridged for maximum hilarity. Enjoy our interview with FEAR AGENT’S Rick Remender!

Matt: What a day we have in front of us.

Kara: We’re here with comics legend Rick Remender, and long-time listeners of the show will know that this is Matt’s comic creator god.

Matt: Lower case g.

Matt: First of all, Rick, welcome to the show.

Rick Remender: Thanks, thanks for having me.

Matt: I blab about “Fear Agent” on this show as much as humanly possible, because we didn’t technically carry it for so long. But it’s no secret that Fear Agent is my all-time favorite comic book. This is a huge day for the company and myself, we’re able to share the love.

Full disclosure, I was rereading it again for the 100th time on the train this morning, Rick. Of course, I was sobbing by myself on the train. Trying not to look like a creeper. I’m sure that happens to everybody who reads “Fear Agent.”

Kara: At least, to the people like you who have “Fear Agent” tattoos.

Matt: Yes, I do have a “Fear Agent” tattoo.

Rick: You were crying, because you regretted the tattoo.

Face-melting science fiction epic? Yes, please.

Rick Remender of Fear Agent, Uncanny X-Force, and Captain America joins the podcast to talk about his new creator-owned project, Black Science. Oh, boy. You need to be reading this book. Rick talked about his love of pulp science fiction, months of planning, the current creator-owned landscape and possibly even mind-bending merging of comic worlds. Did we mention he wrote Fear Agent because holy geez.
