BILLIE HOLIDAY

Born in Baltimore in 1915, and dead too early in New York in 1959, Billie Holiday became a legendary jazz singer, even mythical. With her voice even now managing to touch so many people, we follow a reporter on the trail of the artist on behalf of a New York daily. Beyond the public scandals that marred the life of the star (alcohol, drugs, violence…), he seeks to restore the truth, revisiting the memory of Billie. Through this investigation, Muñoz and Sampayo trace, through the undertones of racism, and in the wake of the blues, the slow drift of a singer who expressed the deepest emotions in jazz. By internationally renowned Argentine artists, featuring Munoz’ strikingly raw heavy blacks, this is not just a biography but a spell-binding art book tribute.

Tia: We have a huge show. I think one of the biggest we’ve ever done. Am I right about that?

Slim: I am in total agreement.

Tia: I’m sitting here talking with not one, but two American Ninja Warriors named Matt.

Matt Wilson: Oh, I didn’t know that. I didn’t realize that.

Tia: One of them, Matt, aka Slim, you know from the podcast.

Slim: Yes, I’m here.

Tia: The other you might have seen some of his coloring work in books like “Paper Girls,” “Thor,” “Black Widow,” “Daredevil,” and of course, “The Wicked + the Divine.” I’m talking about the wonderful, extraordinary, and very busy Matt Wilson. Hi Matt.

Matt Wilson: Hey. How’s it going?

Slim: It’s going amazing. Let’s get the big stuff out of the way. This is what everyone came here to talk about. How great is American Ninja Warrior? I saw videos of you online doing a course. Can you walk us through your emotions? What was your heart feeling during that?

Matt Wilson: Yeah. I wanted to throw up even though I was just performing in front of a bunch of 13-year-olds and people just in this little local gym, but yeah. I can’t imagine actually doing it on TV. Best time ever. It was so much fun.

What current marvel comics do you recommend

Hey @khoatic-worlds! Lou here, from the podcast crew! You have excellent timing. Three of my favorite current Marvel series have a new issue coming out this week.

image

MOCKINGBIRD by Chelsea Cain, Kate Niemczyk, & Rachelle Rosenberg

This is probably my favorite current Marvel title. It’s so witty, fun, and action packed.  Mockingbird is Bobbi Morse, a top SHIELD agent.  In the first arc, Bobbi is experiencing some…unpleasant side effects after being dosed with a few super serums, and is trying to get to the bottom of things amidst missions going south, corgis, bondage, and ex-boyfriends.  So, Bobbi needs a vacation. In the Civil War II tie-ins (where we are now) she’s on a cruise which turns out to be…not that relaxing. There’s a murder mystery, the Bermuda Triangle is kind of a problem, and don’t even get me started on the cosplayers. This is one of those tie-ins you can read even if you aren’t reading the main Civil War II event, the story tells you what you need to know.

BLACK WIDOW  by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Matt Wilson

This is the Black Widow movie we’ve all been wanting, in comic book form. Not only is the artwork gorgeously cinematic, but the story revolves around Natasha’s relationship with the secrets in her past, including the Red Room and some of her former espionage work that affected current friends and allies.  The Edmondson/Noto run on Black Widow (which is superb) was more about Natasha privately atoning for her past. Here she is forced to reckon with things head on. (Also, if you’re a BuckyNat shipper, pre-order covers for future issues suggest you’ll want to get on this.)

image

BLACK PANTHER by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Brian Stelfreeze, and Chris Sprouse

This is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s first comic book, and he brings the same genius to his superhero stories as he does the cultural and socio-political insights for which he is renown (and I mean this literally, Coates is a MacArthur genius!). In his Black Panther run, Coates puts the two together to tell a story about T’Challa, king of the most technologically advanced nation in the world, trying to protect the people and traditions of Wakanda in the face of violent political unrest led by superhuman terrorists. The second arc of this run sees T’Challa struggling, looking for strategies and allies anywhere he can.  I am so excited for issue #7 (out this week) because Storm, Luke Cage, and Misty Knight (aka The Crew!) are on deck!
