New X-Men 2007 Character redesigns. 

When I got started on my run of New X-Men, the Return of Magik, I needed to figure out how to draw the characters. Some characters I made minor changes, and others I changed completely.

The first thing I did was call Chris Yost and ask him to give me the ages of every character. I’ve always been frustrated with the lack of age variation in the looks of characters. I wanted them to feel like High School characters first, not superheroes. Then i started drawing.

Hellion went from having a short, neat cut to his hair growing about 8 inches in one issue. I just felt his attitude matched that look a bit more. I get a kick out of the fact that he’s still drawn that way today.

Pixie is one of the characters I was most proud of. Chris said she was 14. So i wanted to get that age down and then make sure she felt like.. you know.. a pixie. I went with shorter, pulled up, whimsical hair, black marbled eyes and fairy wings. I wanted a bit of Froud to make it’s way in there. 

The rest of the characters got a minor tweaking and we were off to the races. That was one of the funnest runs I’ve done in comics. I’m proud of my work on it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to go back and redo it now that I’ve grown so much in the nearly 7 years since.
