Grizzly Shark #2 by Ryan Ottley and Ivan Plascencia

Holy Shhhhark attack. Did you pass by one of these amazing covers in your local comic shop or scrolling through the 75k library of comiXology? How is that possible? Anyway, Grizzly Shark #2 marks the *ahem* return of the character from Ryan Ottley’s 2010 creator-owned title from Image comics. If you’re a fan of ultra-violent black comedy this comic should be purchased and downloaded immediately. If violence makes you queasy this is not the comic for you.

If you are an Image Comics fan or a Robert Kirkman fan, you might find Ottley’s art familiar–he’s worked on Kirkman’s superhero title, Invincible, since issue #8. This limited series is the follow up to the black and white, cult hit one-shot from Ottley and Jason Howard Grizzly Shark #2 follows two survivors from the first issue the disemboweled half-torso, Donny, and the seemingly undefeatable hillbilly Jonbob trying to get the futz out of the woods contained the terrifying super-predator that is the grizzlyshark. They are picked up by the side of the road and well the grizzlyshark continues to rain mayhem to folks around these woods.

Ottley’s art is grotesque in the most complementary sense of that word and the art’s cartoonish quality paired with the splatter-house gore make Grizzly Shark an amazing visual story. It’s a jaw-dropper of a comic, and Ottley et al. continue to raise the bar page after page. This comic is a delight for anyone who enjoyed slasher horror films and/or creator features in the mold of Tremors. It’s Jaws if it was directed by Edgar Wright. I can’t wait for the grand finale issue #3 featuring the return of Seabear!
