AVENGERS #39 PAGE 1 TITLE SPLASH

BY DON HECK

This memorable title splash page is drawn by one of the most important artists of the Marvel Silver Age, Don Heck. Mr. Heck was a true “artist’s artist” and was one of primary architects of the early Marvel Universe along with Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

He co-created Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye and is probably best known for his substantial contributions to Iron Man in Tales of Suspense and Avengers. One of the things Heck is remembered for was his ability to portray beautiful women, which he does very well on this splash, which includes Wanda, Jan and two small images of Natasha.

Somehow Heck never got the esteem Kirby and Ditko had, which is a shame.

Heck’s horror comics are outstanding
