Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur #1
Forget all that stuff they say about not judging books by their covers. This book has an awesome cover, and that’s about right. Wait a minute…You might be thinking. Isn’t it supposed to be Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur? Well, friend, I’m glad you asked. Without revealing any spoilers, let me just assure you that everything is explained in issue 1, which sets the stage for a new and beautiful friendship between a (Moon) girl and her dinosaur.
Lunella Lafayette isn’t merely the girl version of Moon Boy. Writers Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, with artist Natacha Bustos, give Lunella a personality and story all her own, situating her within the current Marvel line-up of extraordinary people trying to reconcile their abilities with their everyday lives. Only, this oddball child genius is so urgently focused on learning more about Inhuman DNA, Lunella doesn’t have time to care about everyday concerns like friends. Which is good, because she doesn’t have any. And yet, the reader gets the sense that she could use one. A friend who won’t laugh at her earnest, single-minded pursuit of science. A friend who won’t judge her for being different. (Or, I don’t know, maybe a friend who could help her detect Kree and figure out what’s up with this Terrigen mist? I feel like, generally speaking, those are good qualities to look for in a friend.)
Enter Devil Dinosaur. Like Lunella, he’s a little out of place. A little misunderstood. But this issue leaves you with the sense that it’s going to be okay, because now they have each other.
