Letter 44 is a sci-fi comic from superstar writer Charles Soule (Lando, Inhumans, Swamp Thing) and Alberto Jimenez Albuquerque. It’s kinda like The West Wing meets Star Trek.
You see, apparently there is a tradition where the outgoing president leaves a note for his new successor. In this story, the guy on his way out has served his term in a very similar fashion to a certain actual 43rd President of The United States, and coming in to take his place is a young liberal favorite Stephen Blades. The letter he gets on his first day in office reveals a shocking secret:
Even more than there, there is a crew already on there way! A tight-knight, multicultural group of citizen scientists and military officers are aboard a ship named The Clarke, hurtling through space. They’ll be making contact soon.
Oh an one of them is pregnant.
Although it’s not entirely clear who the father is as they crew of The Clarke don’t adhere to the same relationship confines that are so common on Earth.
Also 8 issues in it had one of the best metatextual jokes I’ve ever seen in a comic.
It’s about action.
And Intrigue.
And hope.
And it’s the best comic you’re probably not reading. So go check it out. The first 20 issues are available instantly right here.
