I wrote a Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic!

UGH I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS. I wrote a Buffy the Vampire Slayer graphic novel, with art by Yishan Li, which will be out from Dark Horse in June 2016! Go to The Mary Sue for an interview with me, as well as some artwork by Yishan from the comic. Here’s some drawings of the BTVS characters by Yishan:

SO NICE, RIGHT???? Funny story: Buffy is LITERALLY the reason I started making comics. I was super into the show as a teenager, and really wanted to read a comic like Buffy. Y’know, something with a teenage girl saving the world, supernatural adventures, angst, etc. But it was the late 90s/early 00s, and there wasn’t really any comics like that out there (this was pre-manga boom). So I started making my own webcomic, a comic that started out as a Buffy rip-off. That comic was called Demonology 101, and when I was finished with it (five years and 700+ pages later), I had fallen in love with making comics. Buffy is the reason I started making comics, and probably the reason I have this amazing career as a cartoonist, fifteen years later.

Anyway, back in 2013 I was a guest of San Diego Comic-con. And I got to meet Joss Whedon:

Meeting Joss was the beginning of this project, so it’s been in the works for a while! Oh, hilariously, the day before I got to meet Joss was the day this happened:

After meeting the Avatar crew (and my head exploding), my editor on this Buffy project, Sierra, took me and my boyfriend, Tim, out for lunch. We were pretty giddy, having just met some of our artistic heroes. At lunch, Sierra pitched me the Buffy project, asking if I would be interested in writing it. I was thrilled and kept making O_O faces at her. Then she asked if I wanted to meet Joss the next day. I was like whaaaaaat. Tim started laughing.

“WHAT???” I said, still making a O_O face.

“You’re getting to meet everyone,” he said.

And I did. :D

Anyway, this comic was a lot of fun to work on, and I hope you guys will pick it up! Yishan has been killing it on art, and it was a dream to write a property that was so hugely influential.
