David Mazzucchelli
(1984-1986)
Tearing out of the gate with stunning, artistically mature work under famed Batman scribe Denny O’Neil, believe it or not, his run on Daredevil represents David Mazzucchelli’s very first comic work.
Characterized by a pristine photo realism with generous pepperings of expressionism and film noir, Mazzucchelli is one of the rare breeds of artist who can be credibly described as equal parts technician… and storyteller. His work with Frank Miller on ‘Batman: Year One’ seems to kick up the most dust (Batman simply being a better known comic, after all) but his art on Daredevil boasts the same energy… with a bit more technical precision.
And then there’s Daredevil: Born Again.
Tightly wound, lushly illustrated, and only slightly less addictive than candy-coated crack, the graphic novel represents the artistic zenith for both Mazzucchelli… and collaborator Frank Miller. Both men working on the character they love, telling exactly the story they want to tell.
David Mazzucchelli is a talent of superlative proportions.
