A comiXologist Recommends:
Kate Kasenow recommends Ms. Marvel #3
As a recent reboot, the new Ms. Marvel series from Marvel Comics has quite a history to live up to, but the newest issue does not disappoint!
Written by seasoned comics novelist G. Willow Wilson (gwillow) and illustrated by the talented Adrian Alphona with beautiful colors by Ian Herring (iherring) , Ms. Marvel #3 is the ongoing exploration of what it means to become a hero in a world already inundated with superhero culture. In this issue we are carried along with lead protagonist Kamala Khan as she explores the boundaries of her newfound powers. Tensions are riding high as Kamala’s ongoing struggle to discover who she is bombarded by parental expectations and cultural obligations.
There have been a lot of great things happening in this series from the start. Firstly, we have a new female, Pakistani, Muslim superhero. Second, we have a diverse cast full of great characters who are given their own chances to shine and develop in each issue. Lastly, we are viewing the established Marvel universe through the unique lens; Kamala herself has long been a fan of the superheroes we know, but is a newcomer to their inner workings. That itself is what makes this series perfect for old fans and new readers alike.
So, if you haven’t been reading, now is a great time to get started!

You know when you wake up, and the week feels like it couldn’t possibly get any longer, but then you realize it’s #NewComicDay and everything is going to be alright? Today is one of those days. Here are my picks for the week:
Saga vol. 3 - So much insanity happened in this last arc that I really can’t wait to go back and re-read all of it. If you’re one of the few that hasn’t jumped on the Saga bandwagon, now is a good chance to get all the way caught up before the new issue comes out in May. PS luv u oswald d heist.
Thor: God of Thunder #20 - Did you see how #19 ended?!?! Who’s ready to see Old Thor vs. Galactus. This guys is. That’s who!
Sex Criminals #5 -I’ll be the first to admit SexCrims4 fell a bit flat for me, but I just finished reading #5 and I guess the refractory period is over #ifyaknowwhatimsayin
Zero #6 - Ugh, just read Zero already, will ya? I can’t explain it, just take my word for it. And pay close attention TO EVERYTHING.
Ms. Marvel #2 - gwillow has the next comic book juggernaut on her hands, i tell u what. Issue #1 was so much fun, I can’t wait to read #2.
Letter 44 #5 - I heard so much buzz when this book first came out, but haven’t heard much since, but let me tell you something… THIS BOOK IS INCREDIBLE! It’s only 5 issues in so you can go and get caught up during your lunch break or something. Go!
February 5th is one of the most important dates in 2014. It’s the launch of Marvel’s first Muslim and Pakistani American character- with her own title, to boot. This is a big day for a lot of people in fandom, and for me personally, and to celebrate this wonderful step into a more diverse year for Marvel, we’re bringing the party to you! We’re celebrating Kamala’s launch right here on tumblr, in the #kamalakhanlaunch tag all day (as a part of our month long celebration of female characters and creators in comics, February Femfest.)
We’re going to be reading comics, speculating about the next issues, posting fanworks and meta and playlists, and keep an eye on the tag because there will also be an art giveaway! To join this party, meet us in the #kamalakhanlaunch and #february femfest tags February 5th!
See you then!
MS. MARVEL #1 by G. Willow Wilson ( gwillow ) and Adrian Alphona is available for preorder/subscription on comiXology!
We are so freaking excited about this book! If you are too, make sure to show your support by preordering the hell out of it!
Can we get a signal boost from the Kamala Korps?
Can we make Ms. Marvel the most preordered/subscribed to book in comiXology history? If you want to see more stuff like this from Marvel in the future this is one of the best ways to let them know!
Looking forward to when one of you sets up the first annual KamalaCon.
PS: Here’s a nifty little doodle about preordering/subscribing.
